Lonnie Jackson lifts BC over Va. Tech; UMass rallies past St. Bonaventure; Harvard, BU win

Lonnie Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining for the winning basket as Boston College knocked off Virginia Tech, 62-59, on Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.

With the Eagles trailing by a point, Jackson hit the trey from the left wing — his first points of the half — to put BC up 61-59. Joe Rahon was fouled while rebounding a Virginia Tech miss with two seconds left and hit one free throw to complete the scoring.

Jackson scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds. Olivier Hanlan had 14 points and four boards, and Ryan Anderson had six points and 12 rebounds. Dennis Clifford, playing in his second game of the season, came off the bench to contribute six points and six rebounds.

Adam Smith led the Hokies (8-7, 1-2 ACC) with 12 points.

The Eagles (5-11, 1-2), who had lost seven of their previous eight games, host second-ranked Syracuse on Monday night (9 p.m.).

– In Amherst, Raphiael Putney amassed 17 points and eight rebounds, and UMass rallied from a 13-point deficit with 10 minutes remaining to capture a 73-68 victory over St. Bonaventure.

Cady Lalanne added 16 points for the 19th-ranked Minutemen (14-1, 2-0 A-10), who were plagued by early turnovers and poor shooting. The team’s leading scorer, Chaz Williams, had a tough shooting night, missing 6-of-7 shots, but finished with eight points and nine assists.

Trey Davis, who missed eight of his first nine shots, had two key buckets down the stretch. He hit a banker in the lane and then a long 3-pointer with 1:13 left that put UMass ahead 69-68. Williams and Putney each hit two free throws in the final 10 seconds to close out the scoring.

Charlon Kloof scored 15 points and handed out seven assists for St. Bonaventure (11-5, 1-1).

UMass next play at George Mason on Wednesday night.

Brandyn Curry scored all 17 of his points in the second half as Harvard opened Ivy League play with a 61-45 victory over visiting Dartmouth.

Steve Moundou-Missi had 16 points for the Crimson (14-2, 1-0), who never trailed in the game but were tied at 30-all early in the second half before pulling away. Curry scored eight points during a 16-2 run over six minutes.

Gabas Maldunas scored 23 points on 9-of-13 shooting for the Big Green (7-7, 0-1), but no other Dartmouth player had more than two field goals.

Wesley Saunders (knee) sat out his second straight game for Harvard, which plays at Florida Atlantic on Tuesday night.

John Papale scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half, and Boston University remained undefeated in Patriot League play with an 89-78 victory over Lafayette in Easton, Pa.

Maurice Watson Jr. had 14 points and nine assists for the Terriers (11-6, 4-0), who broke open a two-point game with a 19-6 run early in the second half.

Dan Trist had 19 points for Lafayette (4-11, 0-4).

BU next hosts Colgate on Wednesday night.

Ryan Frazier hit a jumper with 42 seconds left as part of a 6-0 run that lifted Bucknell past Holy Cross, 61-57, in Lewisburg, Pa.

Ben Brackney scored 13 points for Bucknell (8-7, 3-1 Patriot), which rallied from a 13-point first-half deficit.

Malcolm Miller had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Crusaders (7-9, 1-3), who fell behind by seven in the second half but came back to take a three-point lead with 4:34 remaining after a Justin Burrell jumper. The Bison then went on the game-deciding 6-0 run. Dave Dudzinski hit two free throws to get HC within a point, and the Crusaders had a chance to take the lead late but Burell couldn’t connect on a 3-pointer.

HC next plays at Army on Wednesday night.

– In Philadelphia, Chris Fouch scored 31 points, including 11 in the second overtime, as Drexel turned away Northeastern, 93-88.

Frantz Massenat had 27 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for the Dragons (9-6, 1-1 CAA).

For the Huskies (4-12, 1-1), Demetrius Pollard scored 19 points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer that forced the first overtime. Scott Eatherton had 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Marco Banegas-Flores tallied 17 points.

NU hosts Charleston on Monday night.
