BC rolls past Va. Tech; No. 21 UMass falls at St. Bonaventure

Joe Rahon hit 5-of-8 3-pointers and scored 20 points to go along with six assists as Boston College cruised to a 76-52 victory over Virginia Tech on Wednesday night at Conte Forum.

Ryan Anderson added 18 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots for the Eagles (6-14, 2-5 ACC). Patrick Heckmann contributed 14 points off the bench and Olivier Hanlan scored 11 points.

Jarell Eddie had 23 points and 10 rebounds for Virginia Tech (8-12, 1-7).

BC led 46-33 at the half and opened the second period on an 8-0 run. The Eagles held the Hokies to 19 points in the second half.

The win was BC’s second-largest in ACC play. Both of BC’s league wins this season have come against the Hokies.

– In Olean, N.Y., Youssou Ndoye scored 11 of his 12 points in the second half to help St. Bonaventure knock off No. 21 UMass, 78-65.

Trey Davis scored 18 points for the Minutemen (17-3, 4-2 Atlantic-10). Chaz Williams was kept in check by a swarming St. Bonaventure defense, as he shot just 3-for-10. Williams finished with 11 points and six assists and fouled out with 1:39 left.

Charlon Kloof scored 14 points for the Bonnies (13-8, 3-4), who snapped a 24-game losing streak against ranked opponents spanning 14 years. The St. Bonaventure crowd stormed the court after the game.

St. Bonaventure, which led 26-25 at the break, took the lead for good with 18:47 left on a jumper from Matthew Wright. UMass was within two points with 8:46 remaining after a dunk by Raphiael Putney, but the Bonnies then embarked on an 11-3 run, capped by consecutive driving baskets by Dion Wright.

D.J. Irving scored eight of his 22 points in overtime as Boston University blew a 22-point second-half lead but managed to turn away Army, 86-81, at Agganis Arena.

Irving went 12-for-12 from the free throw line, including 8-for-8 in OT. Also for BU (15-7, 8-1 Patriot), Cedric Hankerson scored 19 points and Malik Thomas netted 18, including a 3-pointer to start the OT.

Kyle Wilson scored 23 points for Army (10-10, 6-3), including seven in OT. His layup with 11 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game at 72. He also answered Thomas’ 3-pointer in OT and then hit a free throw with 2:33 left to put the Black Knights ahead, 76-75.

Irving then hit six consecutive free throws over a 54-second span to give the hosts an 81-76 lead. After another Wilson trey, Irving hit two free throws with 27 seconds left for a four-point cushion.

Army’s Dylan Cox hit a layup with 21 seconds left, but Thomas hit a free throw one second later to make it 84-81. Wilson missed two 3-point attempts in the closing seconds. Thomas capped the scoring by hitting two free throws with one second remaining.

BU opened the game on an 18-4 run and led 37-18 at halftime. The lead peaked at 22 early in the second half before Army tallied, eventually tying the game at 70 with 1:30 left on a 3-pointer from Cox.

– In Worcester, Dave Dudzinski had 24 points and 12 rebounds to lead Holy Cross to a 60-51 victory over Loyola (Md.).

Dudzinski hit 8-of-11 baskets and added three steals. Also for HC (12-9, 6-3 Patriot), Justin Burrell scored 10 points, and Malcolm Miller had nine points and seven rebounds.

Dylon Cormier scored 15 points for Loyola (9-11, 4-5), which trailed 28-19 at the half but rallied to get within two points with three minutes remaining. HC then closed the game on a 9-2 run. Anthony Thompson had six of the points in that game-ending spurt, including a three-point play that started the run.

Andre Nation scored 13 points as James Madison held off Northeastern, 49-46, at Matthews Arena.

David Walker scored 15 points and Scott Eatherton had 13 rebounds and three blocks for the Huskies (7-15, 4-4 CAA).

The game was tied at 24 at the break. NU fell behind by seven with eight minutes remaining but tied it up at 41 with a 7-0 run capped by a Walker 3-pointer with 5:20 left. It was tied at 44 when JMU’s Andrey Semenov hit a 3-pointer with 3:15 left. Zach Stahl answered with a layup with 2:37 left, but that would be NU’s final points. Taylor Bessick hit a layup with six seconds remaining for the final count. Demetrius Pollard missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
